Sporting Events in Metro Detroit

When you're making plans for your bachelor party in Detroit, you may want to include one of our famous sporting events! If you're new to the area, this information on our sports teams and events will help you with the planning process for your bachelor party.

While Detroit is often known as the Motor City for its automotive history, or as Motown for its musical history, we also have a very lengthy history of hosting some of the best sports events in the world, from our daily games featuring the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Lions, to historic sport events like the 2006 SuperBowl XL and the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four.

Our city has everything from major league sports to minor-league and college sports, and we were named Best Sports City by Sporting News in 2007 for good reason! Let's talk a little bit about our teams, and we'll give you some links to check out their game schedules so you can plan your bachelor party around those key dates!

If you love professional hockey and you live in The D, chances are you have spent many hours at Joe Louis Arena cheering on our Red Wings. They are one of the most popular teams in the league, and their fan base stretches far and wide. It's a Detroit tradition for fans to grab an octopus and throw it on the ice for luck. Why? It seems a fish merchant started the tradition in 1952. The sea creature's eight legs represent how many games it took to win the Stanley Cup back then. The Red Wings have brought home many championships for our city, and catching one of their games on the night of your bachelor party is a great way to celebrate your last night of freedom!

Since the 1980s, the Detroit Pistons have been one of our proudest teams. Winning championships in 1989, 1990, and 2004, the Bad Boys of Basketball run the court at the Palace of Auburn Hills. It's common to see local celebrities at the games. We have personally spotted Kid Rock and Eminem on several occasions, and friends tell us that Bob Seger and Aretha Franklin have frequented the VIP box there as well. While at the game you can enjoy some great food from Buffalo Wild Wings which is located inside the Palace, and don't forget to check out the two merchandise shops within the arena to grab some Pistons gear for you and your buddies!

Everybody in Detroit loves the Tigers. There is such a rich history here, and did you know that the Tigers are one of the few teams that are still in their original city? You'll recognize that familiar logo, the old English D, anywhere. And this hardworking team has brought home championships for us a total of eight times, spanning an amazing history from 1901 to the present. Though historic Tigers Stadium is no more, you can catch the game at the all-new Comerica Park, which is designed to be a modern version of the old school stadium. There are so many fun things to do there beyond just watching the game.

Though the Detroit Lions are known more for their losses than for their wins, and they haven't won a championship since 1957, they are still well-loved and a Detroit tradition. The games still sell out, and their Thanksgiving Day game is a major tradition for the city. They play at Ford Field, one of the newer sports venues in the city of Detroit.
